UK University Without A-Levels or Baccalaureate — Complete Guide 2026

The UK university system is fundamentally different from most European systems. Work experience can replace academic qualifications through two main pathways: Access to Higher Education and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Access to Higher Education

A 1-year preparatory course designed for adults without traditional qualifications. Upon completion, you receive an Access to HE Diploma, recognised by all UK universities.

Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have 3-5 years of relevant work experience, universities can admit you directly without any preparatory course. Your experience is evaluated through a portfolio, CV, and personal statement.

Foundation Year

An integrated preparatory year at the start of your degree programme. Student Finance covers all 4 years (1 Foundation + 3 degree).
